# Age and context of the oldest known hominin fossils from Flores

Adam Brumm, Gerrit D. van den Bergh, Michael Storey et al., 2016. _Nature 534: 249-253_.

The Mata Menge fossil layer was deposited about 700,000 years ago (40Ar/39Ar and fission-track dates on bracketing tephra, with US-ESR on teeth), in a dry, open grassland setting, with stone tools much like those of Liang Bua.
