# Arecibo Wow! I: An Astrophysical Explanation for the Wow! Signal

Abel Méndez, Kevin Ortiz Ceballos, Jorge I. Zuluaga, 2024. _arXiv_.

Reports Arecibo drift scans at 1420 MHz from February to May 2020 that found narrowband signals from small cold hydrogen clouds, about a hundred times weaker than the Wow! signal, and proposes that the Wow! signal was a maser-like or superradiant brightening of such a cloud triggered by a magnetar flare or soft gamma repeater.

## What it's used for here

The leading natural hypothesis; the authors state that the trigger was not observed and that the hypothesis does not exclude other origins.
