# Tidal fragmentation as the origin of 1I/2017 U1 ('Oumuamua)

Yun Zhang, Douglas N. C. Lin, 2020. _Nature Astronomy_.

Simulations in which volatile-rich bodies passing close to their star are torn into elongated fragments with axis ratios below 1:10, baked surfaces and buried water ice, then ejected; buried water could then give the acceleration without visible activity. Nature Astronomy 4, 852-860.
