# The Beale Cipher: A Dissenting Opinion

James J. Gillogly, 1980. _Cryptologia 4(2): 116-119_.

Applies the Declaration of Independence key from cipher 2 to cipher 1 and finds long alphabetical runs such as "abcdefghiijklmmnohpp" that chance would not produce, arguing that cipher 1 was generated from the Declaration by someone who was not encoding a message. The strongest single argument for a hoax.
