# The Lost Colony and Jamestown droughts

David W. Stahle, Malcolm K. Cleaveland, Dennis B. Blanton et al., 1998. _Science 280(5363), 564–567_.

Bald cypress tree rings from south-east Virginia show that the colony disappeared during the most extreme drought in 800 years (1587–1589), and that the worst of Jamestown's mortality fell in the driest seven years in 770 (1606–1612).
