# Segmenting Numerical Substitution Ciphers

Nada Aldarrab, Jonathan May, 2022.

Offers the first automatic methods for splitting unspaced numerical ciphers into their cipher units, using byte-pair encoding and unigram language models, and a lattice method for reading ciphers whose keys allow more than one value per sign. With it the authors fully solved a real historical cipher, the IA cipher.

## What it's used for here

The book applies its unigram segmentation to Voynichese in the chapter on looking for the key, and the cryptanalysis survey takes it as the model for a joint segmentation-and-substitution test.
