# The layout layer hides some language structure

Part of the text's departure from language is made by the layout layer: line-edge variants are near-identical spellings of one word used in the same contexts, so they inflate form-function coupling, and they scatter one word over several forms, which hides word-order information.

## Where it stands

**Most likely** Its test partly supported it: one piece of evidence for, one against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.

## What it predicts

- On half C, under each of the normalised and interior versions, form-function coupling falls by at least a third or the word-order gain rises by at least 0.10 bits per word, against the raw half C.

## What would rule it out

- Neither change reaches its bar under either version.
