Winn listed 210 signs and reduced them to about 30 core shapes with variants; Haarmann counts 700 to 1,000 components; Merlini's DatDas holds 5,421 sign occurrences but is not published as data⁠[[1]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDKP9499A0/pre-writing-in-southeastern-europe-the-sign-system-of-the)⁠[[2]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDMKHPVANW/the-danube-script-and-other-ancient-writing-systems-a)⁠[[3]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDMME8S2NA/neo-eneolithic-literacy-in-southeastern-europe-an-inquiry). Mäder found that Winn's list rotated and merged marks arbitrarily, so the inventory itself is in dispute⁠[[4]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDMNMGY359/ist-die-donauschrift-schrift-eine-systematische-untersuchung). In the open corpus 72 of 185 sign types occur once, which is what a mark system, not a script, looks like⁠[[5]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDNEMDSTTH/corpora-of-non-linguistic-symbol-systems).
