The Vinča signs are a writing system, the Old European or Danube script, able to record language or fixed meanings, developed independently before Mesopotamian writing.

## Where it stands

**Still possible** One piece of evidence for, two against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.

## What it predicts

- Multi-sign sequences repeat across sites far more often than a potters'-mark null model predicts.
- Sign order within a sequence carries information: some signs are confined to initial or final position, as in every known script.
- Longer texts (tens of signs) exist and will turn up in excavated contexts.
- A numeral system with bundling, not just strokes, is present.

## What would rule it out

- An open corpus shows that sequence repetition and positional structure are no stronger than in heraldry, kudurru emblems or barn-star corpora of the same size.
- The longer objects (Tărtăria, Gradešnica) prove to be intrusive, modern or unrelated to the Vinča pottery marks.
