**Four answers, none ahead** None is ahead yet. See what would settle it.

## Where it stands

Four answers have been proposed. None is ahead on the evidence yet. Four are still possible.

## Why it matters

Proposals linking Sumerian to Indo-European, Dravidian, Uralic, Turkic, Austroasiatic, Sino-Tibetan and various macrofamilies have all been rejected, and Rubio's 1999 study found that the words cited for a pre-Sumerian substratum are loans, compounds or otherwise explicable[[1]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDJNJFJGDJ/sumerian-language-wikipedia-article)[[2]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDHR5BNVDP/on-the-alleged-pre-sumerian-substratum). Whittaker's Euphratic, an early Indo-European contact language, is the one proposal still defended by its author and rejected by the field[[3]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDHQE9W64H/the-sumerian-question-reviewing-the-issues).
