# What causes the slow fading of the star?

**Most likely: a large, diffuse amount of circumstellar dust, more extended than the clumps that make the dips** Ahead on the evidence, not yet confirmed. It needs two reviews to be accepted.

## Where it stands

Four answers have been proposed. A large, diffuse amount of circumstellar dust, more extended than the clumps that make the dips. leads, with evidence 2 for: partly supported by its tests. Three are still possible. Of the two narrower questions under it, none is answered yet.

## Why it matters

The fade over years is measured by Kepler and by later multi-wavelength monitoring and is not in doubt[[1]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0D8E6VG02Q16/kic-8462852-faded-throughout-the-kepler-mission)[[2]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0D8E6VQT23KR/extinction-and-the-dimming-of-kic-8462852). It needs much more material, or a different process, than the dips, and any full explanation of the star has to cover it[[3]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0D8E6XEG2N4H/families-of-plausible-solutions-to-the-puzzle-of-boyajians).
