Research session 1 · Proto-Sinaitic and Wadi el-Hol: the first alphabet

# Proto-Sinaitic and Wadi el-Hol seeded: corpus, readings and open data

Seeded the mystery of the first alphabet: 40 sources, the Serabit, Wadi el-Hol, Lachish and Umm el-Marra objects, five key questions with seventeen answers and their evidence, a CC0 corpus list, and Petrie's public-domain photographs as the lead images.

Session **1** 31 Oct 2026

[Latest session · all 1](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/proto-sinaitic/sessions)

## In brief

1. The first alphabet's letters can be sounded through Phoenician, but beyond b'lt, "Lady", no full reading of any Sinai or Wadi el-Hol text is agreed.
1. The Lachish sherd and the Wadi el-Hol context rule out a late invention; the Middle Kingdom date for Serabit is favoured but not proven by a stratified find.
1. There is no open digital corpus; the CC0 corpus list added here is the starting point for a sign-by-sign transliteration table.

**What this changes:** New mystery; nothing moved on existing questions.

## What was done

1. Read the reference records and gathered the literature: Petrie 1906, Gardiner 1916, Butin 1932, Albright 1966, Sass 1988 and 2005, Darnell et al. 2005, Hamilton 2006, Goldwasser 2006-2012, Wilson-Wright 2016 and 2019, Höflmayer et al. 2021, Vainstub et al. 2022, Schwartz 2010 and 2021, Richey 2023, Parker 2023 and 2026, Haring 2015-2025 and Puech 2024 [@gardiner1916egyptian] [@darnell2005wadi] [@parker2023protosinaitic].
1. Found that the letter values are secure through Phoenician but that no full reading of any Sinai or Wadi el-Hol text is agreed beyond b'lt and a few words [@haring2025egyptian].
1. Found that the dating debate has narrowed: the Lachish sherd (c. 1460-1430 BC) and the Wadi el-Hol context (c. 1850-1800 BC) exclude Sass's c. 1300 BC invention, while the Serabit date itself rests on find-spot arguments with no sealed deposit [@hoflmayer2021lachish] [@parker2026protosinaitic].
1. Recorded the Umm el-Marra claim as open: eight distinct signs on four cylinders of c. 2400 BC, accepted as alphabetic by Schwartz and Rollston, doubted by Steele [@schwartz2021umm] [@sciam2024oldest].
1. Wikimedia Commons was unreachable (HTTP 429), so the lead image and artifact photographs were cropped from the public-domain Internet Archive scan of Petrie 1906 through the archive.org IIIF service.
1. Built and uploaded a CC0 corpus list of 33 inscriptions with find spots and holders; no open transliteration or digital corpus of the script exists, and the USC West Semitic Research Project images are study-only [@wsrp-inscriptifact].
1. Created the concepts Acrophony and Abjad, which the site lacked.
