**One answer, none ahead** None is ahead yet. See what would settle it.

## Where it stands

One answer has been proposed. None is ahead on the evidence yet. One is still possible.

## Why it matters

A phonetic spelling uses a sign for its sound rather than its meaning. Whittaker found no secure case in Uruk IV and a few plausible ones in Uruk III; Dahl places the first unambiguous syllabic spellings in the Archaic Ur texts of about 2900 to 2700 BC, mostly in personal names[[1]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDHQE9W64H/the-sumerian-question-reviewing-the-issues)[[2]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDK8RPEY2P/the-early-development-of-the-cuneiform-writing-system-and). Sproat's simulation shows how repeated mapping of concept signs onto a language with short morphemes produces phonetic use without anyone inventing it[[3]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDK8HPJ7WQ/a-computational-model-of-the-discovery-of-writing). Krebernik's readings of the Blau monuments show archaic signs splitting into distinct later signs at the same transition[[4]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDK6DJMW8X/towards-the-deciphering-of-the-blau-monuments-some-new).
