See what would settle it. ## Where it stands Three answers have been proposed. None is ahead on the evidence yet. Three are still possible. ## Why it matters McCasland's disappearance on 27 February 2026 is the case that made the list national news, and the one most often tied to secret programmes; he is still missing[[1]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQBW9RME6T/search-for-missing-retired-maj-gen-william-neil-mccasland)[[2]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQCBVR5BVM/david-grusch-makes-new-claims-about-missing-gen-mccasland). What happened to him is a question for the sheriff's investigation, and the answer would test the connection claim more directly than any other single case. ## Answers 3 [**He left home on foot of his own accord and died in open country near Albuquerque, where he has not been found** ](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/missing-scientists/answers/ANS0DCQP4CF3Q8R/he-left-home-on-foot-of-his-own-accord-and-died-in-open) None Evidence: 3 for, 1 against Still possible [**He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew** ](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/missing-scientists/answers/ANS0DCQP4R4MZ28/he-was-taken-or-harmed-by-others-because-of-what-he-knew) None Evidence: 1 for, 2 against Still possible [**None of these.** ](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/missing-scientists/answers/ANS0DCQP4X0YJKB/none-of-these) None Evidence: none yet Still possible ## What would settle it 1. Check the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office for any update on McCasland (its last public word, on 4 August 2026, was that it had no updates for release), and record whether he is found. 1. Obtain the sheriff's office releases directly (its site blocked automated reading during this research) and any official map of the search areas, which could then be added as a cited polygon. ## History 1. 2013[U.S. Air Force: he held senior posts in classified space and special-access programmes for decades](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQCC8Q9PKP/major-general-william-n-mccasland)For: He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew 1. 2026[KOB 4: despite searches of the foothills with drones, dogs, helicopters and ground teams, nothing of his has been confirmed…](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQC3Z5GENZ/bcso-expands-search-for-missing-retired-air-force-general)Against: He left home on foot of his own accord and died in open country near Albuquerque, where he has not been found 1. 2026[Conlin: despite searches of the foothills with drones, dogs, helicopters and ground teams, nothing of his has been confirmed…](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQCBVR5BVM/david-grusch-makes-new-claims-about-missing-gen-mccasland)Against: He left home on foot of his own accord and died in open country near Albuquerque, where he has not been found 1. 2026[Hasman: he appears to have left on foot, taking his wallet and backpack and leaving his phone, glasses and watch](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQBW9RME6T/search-for-missing-retired-maj-gen-william-neil-mccasland)For: He left home on foot of his own accord and died in open country near Albuquerque, where he has not been found 1. 2026[KOB 4: he appears to have left on foot, taking his wallet and backpack and leaving his phone, glasses and watch](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQC3Z5GENZ/bcso-expands-search-for-missing-retired-air-force-general)For: He left home on foot of his own accord and died in open country near Albuquerque, where he has not been found 1. 2026[TMZ: his wife told the 911 dispatcher she had "some indication that he planned not to be found"](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQC5289B6Y/wife-of-missing-air-force-general-says-he-planned-not-to-be)For: He left home on foot of his own accord and died in open country near Albuquerque, where he has not been found 1. 2026[KOB 4: the sheriff's office has found no evidence of foul play or of a link to his classified work](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQC3Z5GENZ/bcso-expands-search-for-missing-retired-air-force-general)Against: He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew 1. 2026[Newsweek: the sheriff's office has found no evidence of foul play or of a link to his classified work](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQC4CDF8ZT/neil-mccasland-update-sheriff-addresses-speculation-on)Against: He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew 1. 2026[Schecter et al.: the sheriff's office has found no evidence of foul play or of a link to his classified work](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQCJTADE6A/fbi-investigating-deaths-and-disappearances-of-staff-at)Against: He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew 1. 2026[Ruiz: his wife says his secrets were too dated to be a motive, and his UFO consulting unpaid and for fiction](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQC4JZ7ZZM/missing-retired-air-force-general-consulted-on-ufos-for)Against: He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew 1. 2026[Conlin: his wife says his secrets were too dated to be a motive, and his UFO consulting unpaid and for fiction](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQCBBWQ3XC/exclusive-sheriff-corrects-missing-general-mccasland-reports)Against: He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew 1. 2026[Conlin: he held senior posts in classified space and special-access programmes for decades](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DCQCBVR5BVM/david-grusch-makes-new-claims-about-missing-gen-mccasland)For: He was taken or harmed by others because of what he knew 1.
