In 1986 and 1987 a run of violent deaths among computer engineers at Marconi, the defence arm of the General Electric Company (GEC), became a national story in Britain[[1]][[2]]. The list grew backwards to 1982 and forwards to 1990, reached about 25 names[[3]], and was tied in print to the Sting Ray and Tigerfish torpedoes, Britain's part in the US Strategic Defense Initiative, and Soviet, American or British intelligence[[4]][[5]]. MPs asked for an inquiry; the Ministry of Defence refused and called the deaths a coincidence[[6]][[7]].

The record now looks different from the story. Fewer than a third of the 27 people named worked for GEC, three are not known to have died, and the case with the clearest signs of foul play, Shani Warren's, was solved in 2022 as a murder by a local sex offender[[8]]. Ordinary suicide rates predict more deaths of these kinds among GEC's own scientists and engineers than the lists contain[[9]][[10]]. What remains open is the individual cases, chiefly Dajibhai, Sands, Peapell and Wash, whose inquests left open verdicts and whose files have not been read. ## What is known

Twenty-seven people appear on the lists that circulate as "the Marconi scientists"[[11]][[5]][[3]]. Twenty-four of them died between March 1982 and March 1990, two of them killed by others; three are not known to have died. Eight worked for GEC's Marconi companies or its sister firm Easams; the rest worked for Plessey, British Aerospace, ICL, British Telecom, the Atomic Energy Authority, the Ministry of Defence, the [Royal Military College of Science](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/marconi-scientists/places/PLC0DGGE5F0TX3P/royal-military-college-of-science-shrivenham), a polytechnic, a university and a small firm later bought by GEC.

The cases that made the story were three: Vimal Dajibhai, a Marconi Underwater Systems software engineer found below the [Clifton Suspension Bridge](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/marconi-scientists/places/PLC0DGGE5F0KRPV/clifton-suspension-bridge-bristol) in August 1986 (open verdict); Ashad Sharif, a Marconi Defence Systems analyst found near [Bristol](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/marconi-scientists/places/PLC0DGGE5F0MFK6/bristol) in October 1986 with a rope from a tree to his neck (suicide); and David Sands of Easams, who drove into an empty cafe with petrol cans in his boot in March 1987 (open verdict)[[12]][[4]][[1]]. Peter Peapell of the Royal Military College of Science was found under his car in February 1987 (open verdict)[[2]]; Trevor Knight of Marconi Space and Defence Systems in March 1988 (suicide)[[13]]; Brigadier Peter Ferry, a Marconi marketing director, and Alistair Beckham of Plessey, both electrocuted, in August 1988[[14]][[15]].

Every death went to a coroner. Police said the contested ones were investigated before and after their inquests[[16]], and the Home Office found no link between the two Bristol deaths and Avtar Singh-Gida's disappearance[[17]]. Singh-Gida was found alive in Paris; David Greenhalgh survived his fall[[13]]. Shani Warren, found bound and gagged in [Taplow Lake](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/marconi-scientists/places/PLC0DGGE5F0H98M/taplow-lake-buckinghamshire) in April 1987, was shown in 2022 to have been murdered by Donald Robertson, a local sex offender with no defence connection[[8]].

## How the story grew

Tony Collins of the weekly Computer News linked the two Bristol deaths in early 1987[[1]]. After Sands died, the SDP's John Cartwright wrote to the defence procurement minister that four cases "stretch the possibility of mere coincidence too far"; the Home Secretary told the police forces to liaise, and the government called the deaths "odd" but declined an inquiry[[18]][[2]][[19]]. Wire reports counted six by April 1987, eight by March 1988, thirteen by August 1988 and at least sixteen by October 1988[[2]][[13]][[14]][[20]]. Labour's Doug Hoyle and Eric Deakins pressed ministers with written questions through 1987–1988[[6]][[7]]. Collins's Open Verdict (1990) made it 25[[3]]; a 1998 retrospective said 30[[21]]; online lists from about 2005 fixed the version that circulates now, errors included[[11]]. In 2026 the case was revived as a precedent for the list of missing American scientists.

## The explanations

**Coincidence.** The government, the police and Marconi said the deaths were unconnected: separate people on separate projects for separate companies[[1]][[19]]. This site's base-rate test supports it: at ordinary [England](https://mysteriesdept.com/records/PLC0DCR6HN5JPR9/england) and Wales suicide rates, GEC's 17,500 UK science and engineering graduates alone would produce about 32 suicides and open verdicts in 1982–1990, against 8 GEC cases on the lists[[9]][[10]].

**Soviet-bloc killings.** Raised as a possibility in 1988 by a Cambridge counter-intelligence researcher, with the 1978 umbrella murder of Georgi Markov as precedent[[4]]. No case has produced evidence of it, and the strongest foul-play case, Shani Warren's, turned out to be an ordinary sexual murder[[8]].

**Western killings or cover-up.** Fed by the MoD's refusal to say what Brittan and Bowden did, its refusal of an inquiry and reports that MI5 looked at the deaths[[22]][[7]][[19]]. Nothing released supports it, and nothing released rules it out.

**Stress and the fraud inquiry.** Relatives spoke at inquests of long hours on defence contracts[[14]], and the deaths came during an MoD police and Serious Fraud Office investigation of Marconi's [Portsmouth](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/marconi-scientists/places/PLC0DGGE5F0ZVDR/portsmouth) companies[[23]][[24]]. The MoD said none of the dead had been questioned in it[[6]].

### Published claims

**Published claims and their status**

| Year | Who | Claimed | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1988 | Ministry of Defence[19] | The deaths were investigated by police and coroners and are unconnected; links are "newspaper hype" | Accepted | Consistent with the base-rate test and the 2022 Warren conviction; the police reports themselves are unpublished[19][7]. |
| 1987 | John Cartwright MP[1] | The four 1986–87 cases "stretch the possibility of mere coincidence too far" | Ruled out | Ordinary suicide rates in the workforces concerned predict more such deaths than the lists contain[1]. |
| 1987 | Tony Collins (Computer News)[1] | The Marconi dead worked in the same narrow field of underwater simulation | Disputed | Marconi and the MoD denied any shared project; no programme is named in public sources[1][27]. |
| 1988 | Randall Heather (St Edmund's College, Cambridge)[4] | The deaths may be "a very quiet type of terrorism" by the Soviet bloc | Disputed | No case has produced evidence of it, and the strongest foul-play case was an ordinary murder[4][8]. |
| 1988 | Sunday Times (US source)[20] | The Pentagon wanted to review the cases because some of the dead worked on projects applicable to SDI | Still possible | The MoD told Parliament a month later that it had received no US inquiries[20][7]. |
| 1990 | Tony Collins[3] | 25 deaths in the defence industry, most unexplained, with officialdom obstructing inquiry | Still possible | Of 27 people now on the lists, 15 verdicts rest only on the proponent list, 3 are not known to have died, and 1 was a solved murder unconnected to defence[3][25]. |
| 2005 | Popular retellings (Project Camelot list, The Unredacted, SOFREP)[11] | Twenty-five GEC-Marconi scientists on Sting Ray and SDI projects died mysteriously | Ruled out | Fewer than a third of the people named were GEC staff[11][28][29]. |
| 2022 | Thames Valley Police / Crown Prosecution Service[8] | Shani Warren was murdered by Donald Robertson | Accepted | Convicted at Reading Crown Court on DNA from the gag[8]. |

## The literature

The only book-length study is Tony Collins's Open Verdict: An Account of 25 Mysterious Deaths in the Defence Industry (Sphere, 1990)[[3]], written by the journalist who first connected the cases; reviewers noted that not all 25 were Marconi staff and that Collins's common thread was electronic-warfare work[[25]]. Not seen here. The contemporary record is mainly wire copy and features: the Los Angeles Times (Tyler Marshall, April 1987)[[1]], Associated Press (Marcus Eliason, February 1988)[[19]], the Chicago Tribune (Howard Witt, April 1988)[[4]] and the Australian Financial Review (Peter Huck, December 1988)[[15]]. British papers are cited but mostly unseen here: the Financial Times (April 1987)[[26]], The Independent's editorial "Deaths which must be investigated" (August 1988), the Sunday Times's report of Pentagon interest (October 1988)[[20]] and the Daily Telegraph's "Scientists' deaths 'not a plot'" (February 1989)[[5]]. ABC's 20/20 broadcast "Grave Secrets" in May 1989[[5]].

The parliamentary record is the firmest primary source: some thirty written answers from 1986 to 1990, which give employers, classifications and verdicts and refuse an inquiry[[27]][[6]][[7]]. Later retellings (News Shopper 1998, The Unredacted 2018, SOFREP 2020, CrimeReads 2024) add nothing new and repeat the list's errors[[21]][[28]][[29]][[30]]. Marconi's own press-cuttings file on the deaths, 1988–90, is in the Marconi Archives at the Bodleian[[31]].

## What would settle it

For the deaths as a group, nothing more is needed to explain the count: ordinary rates produce more such deaths than the lists contain. For individual cases, the papers that exist are the inquest files (Avon for Dajibhai and Sharif, Hampshire for Sands, [Oxfordshire](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/marconi-scientists/places/PLC0DGGE5F0TPBE/oxfordshire) for Peapell, Surrey for Ferry and Beckham, Bedfordshire for Wash[[32]]), the unpublished police reports[[33]], the open Foreign Office files on Wash and Moyle at Kew[[34]][[35]], GEC's 1988 internal inquiry[[20]], the papers of the 1990 Winchester fraud case[[24]] and Collins's book[[3]]. Local reports of each inquest, in county papers of 1986–1989, are the quickest way to the evidence heard.
