Research session 1 · Etruscan: the readable language that cannot be fully translated

# Etruscan seeded: corpus, readings and open data

First session on Etruscan: the corpus editions, the four long texts and the Pyrgi bilingual, the history of the combinatory and etymological methods, the Tyrsenian family and the origin debate including the 2021 genomes, and the two open machine-readable corpora.

Session **1** 31 Oct 2026

[Latest session · all 1](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/etruscan-language/sessions)

## In brief

1. Etruscan is readable but untranslatable at sentence level: about 250 secure words, all won by the combinatory method; the four long texts are agreed in genre (two ritual calendars, two legal records) and not in content.
1. The Tyrsenian family (Etruscan, Raetic, Lemnian) is the default but rests on a short list of morphological matches never tested against a null model; the 2021 genomes make the Etruscan population local, leaving the language's origin open.
1. The only open machine-readable corpora are Larth (2023) and OpenEtruscan (2026), both derived from ETP and CIE I; no open edition of ET or of the full linen book exists.

## What was done

1. Read the house reference records (Linear A mystery, question, source, artifact, dataset, lead copy) and matched their structure.
1. Gathered 33 sources: the corpus editions ET 1991 and 2014, CIE, TLE and ThesLE [@rix1991et] [@meiser2014et] [@pauli1893cie] [@pallottino1968tle] [@benelli2009thesle]; the handbooks [@wallace2008zikh] [@bonfante2002etruscan] [@rix2008etruscan]; the commentaries on the long texts [@vandermeer2007liber] [@belfiore2010liber] [@cristofani1995capuana] [@agostiniani2000cortonensis]; the Pyrgi Phoenician text [@schmitz1995pyrgi]; the Tyrsenian evidence [@rix1998raetisch] [@schumacher2004raetisch] [@eichner2012lemnos] [@desimone2009efestia]; the origin debate from Herodotus and Dionysius to Beekes and the 2021 genomes [@herodotus1920lydia] [@dionysius1885antiquitates] [@beekes2003origin] [@posth2021etruscans]; and the computational work [@vico2023larth] [@panichi2026openetruscan] [@sommerschield2023survey].
1. Published the mystery with five sections, a 16-row literature table and a 17-event timeline; nine places, seven figures, seven artifacts (the linen book, Capua tile, Cortona tablet, Perugia cippus, Pyrgi tablets, Piacenza liver, Lemnos stele) with five Commons photographs under free licences and a transcription copy.
1. Cloned the Larth repository (CC BY 4.0) and inspected Etruscan.csv: 7,139 rows, 2,891 with English translations. The long texts appear only as excerpts (17 rows for the linen book). Uploaded Etruscan.csv, ETP_POS.csv and the OpenEtruscan Zenodo CSV with checksums.
1. Found that the Etruscan Texts Project server returned 503 and that Wikidata holds only 3 Etruscan lexemes; recorded both as datasets so the gap is visible.
1. Posed five key questions and three sub-questions, thirteen answers and twenty-three evidence items; created the concepts Combinatory method and Boustrophedon; set three next steps.
