Three answers have been proposed. None is ahead on the evidence yet. Three are still possible.

## Why it matters

Herodotus said the Etruscans were Lydian emigrants; Dionysius of Halicarnassus said they were native to Italy and shared nothing with the Lydians[[1]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDNHRHK2Q0/histories-book-1-chapter-94)[[2]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDNJ2YDBEB/antiquitates-romanae-roman-antiquities-book-1-chapter-30). Beekes restated the Anatolian case from the Lemnos stele and Anatolian names in 2003[[3]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDNHDXPJJA/the-origin-of-the-etruscans). The 2021 genome transect found Iron Age Etruscans with steppe-related ancestry like their Latin neighbours and no recent Anatolian admixture, which answers the question for the population but not for the language[[4]](https://mysteriesdept.com/sources/SRC0DEDNJ8749HZ/the-origin-and-legacy-of-the-etruscans-through-a-2000-year).
