# Eteocretan and Eteocypriot seeded: corpus, readings and open data

Seeded the mystery of two Iron Age languages written in readable scripts: Eteocretan (Greek alphabet, Praisos and Dreros) and Eteocypriot (Cypriot syllabary, Amathus). Recorded the corpus, the two lost bilinguals, the Idalion bilingual that opened the syllabary for Greek, every serious affiliation proposal with its failure point, and a CC0 transliteration file.

## In brief

1. Both scripts are fully readable for sound because they also wrote Greek; the languages are not identified, and the two bilinguals that exist are short, lost and fix only names and perhaps one verb.
1. Every affiliation proposal (Anatolian, Semitic, Tyrrhenian, Hurrian) rests on isolated word matches; the default view of the corpus editors is an unclassified pre-Greek language, possibly continuing Minoan or Cypro-Minoan.
1. No machine-readable corpus existed; the site now holds a CC0 transliteration of the Eteocretan stones and the Amathus bilingual, and the Eteocypriot catalogue remains in print only.

**What this changes:** New mystery; the isolate positions lead on both language questions and the Psychro forgery view leads on its question.

## What was done

1. Read the house-style reference records (Linear A mystery, key question, source, artifact, dataset, lead photo) and the existing Cypro-Minoan mystery, which already holds Janko's Eteocypriot hypothesis for the Enkomi cylinder [@janko2020eteocypriot].
1. Gathered and registered 35 sources: the editions (Conway 1902, Guarducci 1942, van Effenterre 1946, Masson 1957 and 1983, Duhoux 1982, Steele 2013, IG XV 1.1 2020), the affiliation proposals (Davis 1961, Gordon 1962, Brown 1985, Petit 1999, Facchetti 2001, Finkelberg 2005, Duhoux 2010, Magnelli and Petrantoni 2016), the Psychro dispute (Brown 1978, Kritzas 2006, Kenanidis and Papakitsos 2017) and the Cypriot Greek control case (Egetmeyer 2010, the Idalion bilingual) [@duhoux1982eteocretois] [@steele2013linguistic].
1. Established the corpus: six certain Eteocretan stones of about 420 letters, three in Heraklion (inv. 99 to 101), the longer Dreros bilingual lost in the Second World War; 26 Eteocypriot inscriptions in Steele's catalogue, with the Amathus bilingual (ICS 196, IG XV 1.1 no. 7) lost after 1914 [@zitelli2024enigma] [@brown2003eteocretanpages] [@pestarino2024eteocypriot].
1. Compiled a 42-line CSV transliteration of Praisos 1 to 3, both Dreros texts and the Amathus bilingual, released CC0 and attached to a dataset.
1. Recorded 8 places, 8 figures, 14 events, 5 artifacts with 6 copies, 5 datasets, 5 key questions and 2 sub-questions, 13 answers and 21 pieces of evidence. Lead image: Eteocypriot stone in the Ashmolean (AN Inscription 118), CC BY-SA 3.0.
1. Found that no published affiliation survives a check against the whole corpus and the bilinguals; the editors of both corpora treat the languages as unidentified [@duhoux1982eteocretois] [@steele2013linguistic]. No computational or statistical study of either corpus exists.
