# Acrophony

Giving a picture-sign the sound value of the first sound of the word for what it depicts.

[Proto-Sinaitic and Wadi el-Hol: the first alphabet](https://mysteriesdept.com/mysteries/proto-sinaitic)[1 source]

Acrophony is the rule by which a sign that depicts a thing stands for the first sound of that thing's name. In the earliest alphabet a drawing of a house, Semitic bayt, writes the consonant b, and an ox head, 'alp, writes the glottal stop. Gardiner identified the principle in 1916 and used it to read the Proto-Sinaitic word b'lt, "Lady" [@gardiner1916egyptian]. Acrophony matters for decipherment because it lets a reader predict a sign's value from its picture once the language is guessed, and it explains why the letters' later names (aleph, beth) are ordinary words.
